Are vintage Chanel bags better?

Some would argue that they most certainly are, because of the 24k true vintage gold difference.

Did you know that vintage Chanel bags were made with real 24k gold? Chanel stopped using 24k plated gold hardware after their Cruise 2008-2009 collection. Prior to 2008, Chanel handbags were accented with the most gorgeous 24k plated hardware. All chains, clasps, turn-locks, and grommets were made with alloy containing real 24k gold. After 2009, Chanel started using gold-tone hardware.

Ways to Spot 24k Hardware

One of the ways to identify if a Chanel has 24k hardware is to check the CC clasp. There should be a small CC hallmark stamped in the corner. Another way to determine the gold content in the hardware is to check the serial number. Chanel’s serial numbers will tell you the year the bag was made. If the serial number is from before 2008, you know that the hardware is 24k.

Pro tip: 24k plated hardware usually has a slightly darker, richer, antique hue than gold-tone hardware. It is also considerably heavier.

Hardware Today

Chanel’s handbags are now made with a lighter gold-toned hardware, instead of using gold plating. Typically, the hardware is both lighter in weight and color.
